The "CEO's of Tomorrow," students of "From The School House to The White House Leadership Program," travel to Sacramento, CA, to see political action at work at the State Capital. The students had an opportunity to tour the capital city and meet with Assemblymembers Mike Davis, Holly Mitchell, and Steve Bradford.

"Health Fair Day" at Adopt-A-School," Garr Academy of Mathematics and Entrepreneurial Studies (G.A.M.E.S.). Lady Sharon Johnson, our Nutrition and Wellness Chairperson, gave a presentation on nutrition and healthy habits to all of the students in K-5 classes.

Teachers at G.A.M.E.S. and Crenshaw High School were awards roundtrip airline tickets on Southwest Airlines for their commitment and dedication to their students. The Legacy Ladies' program, "Beyond the Bell" recognizes teachers who take a holistic approach to educating their students.

The organization partnered with "Angels for Sight" to provide over 200 free eye exams to elementary students at Garr Academy of Mathematics and Entrepreneurial studies. As a result, 80 students will receive free eyeglasses to correct their visual deficiencies.

Our Authors Study Club, Inc. and the City of Los Angeles Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa, kicked off African American History Month by recognizing Legacy Ladies for their outstanding community service. The event was held at the Los Angeles City Council Chambers.

The organization kicked-off the celebration of their 5th anniversary commencing at View Park Preparatory Charter School; with a day of service called, "Sharing the Torch: Changing the Lives We Touch." The day was spent beautifying the facilities at Challenger's Boys and Girls Club and Horace Mann Middle School, mentoring and conducting workshops for youth and distributing books to "School on Wheels."

The organization also awarded five families as the "2009 Adopt-A-Family," they were: Rene Scott, Ina Dunkett, Ingrid and Kenneth Hunter, Cassandra Reed and LaKeysha Smith.

The organization had a kick-off reception for the 2010 Torch Awards in the Stardust Room, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Fashions were provided by Los Angeles' top designers, LSO Designs and Sterling Capricio. Pol Atteu and Patrick Simpson, of Network International Models and Talent, also provided some of the models.

Legacy Ladies officially adopted G.A.R.R. (Garr Academy of Mathematical and Entrepreneurial Studies) a premier charter school in Los Angeles. Their first project was implementation of an innovative math program, using a special computer software, designed to teach third and fourth grade students algebra.

Ladies Jacqueline Castillo, Patricia Gibson and Yolanda Fletcher (2008 Adopt-A-Family) finalize housing for family in Jacksonville, FL. The Legacy Ladies secured and paid for housing for one year in order to give the family a new lease on life, in addition to purchasing a vehicle for the family.

KABC-TV7 covered the dedication of the "Legacy Ladies, Inc. Technology Center" at Crenshaw High School. A check for $32,609 was presented to Ms. Sanders, Principal at Crenshaw High School, for a mobile training lab. The labs, consisting of lap top computers will be used for an after school program.

The Second Annual Torch Awards was held at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel, honoring Supervisor Yvonne B. Burke, Cathy Hughes, Dr. La-Doris McClaney, Edwin Moses, Theodore Snyder and Nancy Wilson. It was also announced that Ms. Wilson is the organization's first "Honorary" Legacy Lady.

Mary Cleveland and her eight children (2006 Adopt-A-Family) begin moving into their new home. With the assistance of Denise Hunter (FAME), the Legacy Ladies provided the home, negotiated financing, and provided first and last months rent for the Cleveland family, in addition to providing major appliances and home furnishings.

Crenshaw High School Senior Awards Banquet - Legacy Ladies members Jacqueline Castillo and Loretta Williams along with Advisory Board Member, Henry Woods, and special guest, Valerie and Al Spiller, presented $5,000 scholarships each to Katrina Chambers and Qeshanda Strother. Marlissa Danielle Collier received the "first" Legacy Ladies - Ashley Morgan Spiller scholarship for $10,000. The students also received computer laptops and printers in addition to roundtrip airplane tickets on Southwest Airlines.

A delegation of 35 people, including Lady Jacqueline, Advisory Board Member, James Castillo and Torch Award recipient, Dr. LaDoris McClaney, travel to Ghana with Bishop Blake and "Save Africa's Children" to provide missionary services, visit schools, clinics and orphanages that Legacy Ladies has supported.

Legacy Ladies partners with Crenshaw High School to create awareness of HIV/AIDS on World AIDS Day. Seven students out of 150 were recognized and awarded for their artistic talent in conveying a message about HIV/AIDS. Students who showed "most improved" in attendance were recognized in addition to teachers who go above and beyond the call of duty.

Diamond Harris (Adopt-A-Family), had a conversation with President, Jacqueline Castillo, informing her of their family's disappointment not to be considered at this time for an "Extreme Home Makeover" by ABC. Jacqueline immediately sent a compelling email to the executive producer of "ABC Extreme Makeover - Home Edition" informing him why the family should be considered for a home makeover. Approximately 15 minutes later, Jacqueline received a call from the executive producer who just happened to be in the office at that time. The story began...

Ladies Jacqueline Castillo, Patricia Gibson and Katrina Schauble, pleaded their case for the Harris family to the executive producer of "ABC Extreme Makeover - Home Edition." They shared their experience they had with the family in Birmingham. Approximately two weeks later, appliance fixtures were being deliveries to the Harris family, and the rest is history.

In follow-up to the Torch Awards, Legacy Ladies, Inc. presented a check in the amount of $15,000 to Bishop Charles E. Blake, of West Angeles Church of God in Christ, for Save Africa's Children. Bishop Blake has served as surrogate father to thousands of children who have been orphaned as a result of the AIDS pandemic crisis in Africa.

Ladies Patricia Gibson and Jacqueline Castillo traveled to Birmingham, AL, for the third birthday celebration of the Harris family sextuplets (Adopt-a-Family). They presented a check for $35,000 for their trust fund.

Ladies Lisa and and Jacqueline traveled to San Francisco to establish a partnership with Global AIDS Interfaith Alliance (GAIA), under the direction of Bill Rankin, to continue the efforts of providing orphan care, AIDS education and prevention, and women empowerment programs in the villages of Malawi, in Africa.

Jenesse Center, a home for domestic violence survivors, received a "makeover" to the interior of their emergency shelter through the "A Coat of Paint" project. The members and volunteers contributed over 145 hours in painting the facility to give the families a fresh outlook on life.

Partnered with the National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE). The objective of the enrichment program is to teach middle and high school students business concepts and life skills to enhance their economic productivity. The first community project initiated by Legacy Ladies was voter registration and absentee voting awareness campaign. It was held at the Staple Center during the Los Angeles Black Business Expo and Trade Show. They partnered with African American Citizens for Change and the Los Angeles Urban League Young Professionals. This effort resulted in over 500 new registered voters and absentee voters over three days.
