Growing up in an urban setting made it difficult at times for Faith Hicks to get a sense of what success is.  Often she relied on her perseverance and willingness to fight for a better life.

At the early age of five while living in Long Beach, Faith remembers playing in an alley next to the one-bedroom apartment she shared with her mother and two brothers, while watching the frequent patrol of police looking for drug addicts or drug dealers.

At age 14, Faith and her family eventually moved to Los Angeles. Faith recalls not always have the school supplies she needed on the first day of school.  There were times at the end of the month, where money and food were difficult to come by.  This lit a fire within Faith to fight for success and for a better way of life.

Moving to Los Angeles ultimately had a positive impact on Faith’s life. She was exposed to more opportunities and she was inspired to see African-Americans at her school graduating at the top of their class.  She started taking a more active role in school and in her community.

Today, Faith is a well-rounded, articulate, and inspiring young leader with a bright future ahead.  She is a consecutive honor roll student within the Honor’s Society. She is an active member in the Mayor’s Youth Council, the Academic Decathlon, the West Adams Black Pearls Mentorship Program, and let’s not forget the Legacy Ladies, Incorporated School House to the White House Leadership Academy.  She has been named a POSSE Scholar and is one of the top Advanced Placement students in her school.

Faith is the first member of her family to go to college, and it is a banner she wears with pride.  She plans to continue enhancing her love of education and leadership.  “In her words, “Failure is not an option.”
